Chapter 11

Miller rarely set foot in the Savior’s Race Club. The people who frequented the place tended to be the ultra wealthy, the types that stood so far above anyone below them, they didn’t know what ‘well-off’ looked like. Poor was a statistic to them, an inconvenience they took flak for not correcting.

If they had their way, the lowest class of people would be jettisoned into space, done away with so the elite wouldn’t have to hear about them anymore. As far as they were concerned, Mars belonged only to the best of the best. And by that, those who could afford anything they wanted.

Those people became so bad, and so corrupt, they competed with one another on how frivolous they could be without spending the money to prove it. If someone had the capacity to buy a star liner while their rival might only afford a shuttle, then the richer of the two enjoyed bragging rights.

If the poor only knew how ridiculous those people could be, they’d probably join the rebellion in a heartbeat. They might just take it upon themselves to raid a place like Savior’s and kill everyone inside, wealthy and servant alike. Anyone enabling the rich like that probably didn’t deserve to live.

At least in the eyes of a revolt.

Ethan managed to find a way into the facility, though he had to be careful about flashing too much wealth. On the surface, he was a successful merchant, but everyone there knew the truth. And it’s why they generally allowed him to win at most of the games they played. Of course, racing was another story and he got taken for quite a huge sum often enough.

But he enjoyed hobnobbing with the Board’s version of royalty. And even a few of the nobles who came from Earth. It made Ethan feel better than he really was, like a real man. Miller didn’t understand the benefit nor the desire. He felt like anyone with the name Constance should be keeping a low profile.

That just wasn’t his boss’ style. So he had to deal with the fact the man called him out to a public place for an important meeting. One that was sure to make Ethan break out in hives. If not him, the people directly beneath him. Borland probably had some dressing down to look forward to.

The building near an old-style dirt race track looked like something out of nineteenth century England. Dark wood panels decorated the interior while the outside enjoyed an exterior with red boards on the top and brick work at the bottom. The designers took care to give it an old-world charm, a sense of Earth’s past specifically designed for Mars.

Real, plush carpet started just after the foyer entrance, stretching across to the reception desk directly ahead. A door on the left led to an observation deck along with access to the seats for people to watch the races. A restaurant was on the right, one of the finest establishments on the planet.

Ethan started for the left when a young woman cleared her throat, waving at him from the restaurant.
